This being the first episode, I’d really appreciate any comments you have. Didn’t like the music? Did you have trouble fetching or hearing it? Did I sound terrible? Whatever’s on your mind, I’d like to hear it.

Shoutouts go to Jason Van Orden at Podcasting Underground for putting up with countless stupid questions.

You have a good radio voice. Only suggestion there would be to speed up the delivery a bit. But not too much. Find the happy medium between Louisiana-lazy and Missouri-maniac! :-) If you find that a faster speed leads to more trip ups, just record each bullet item separately and just do multiple takes ’til you get it right, and stitch them together later (if you’re not already doing this).

Music was a bit drab for my tastes, but at least it didn’t interfere with the vocals or take up too much time.

    What’s your recording setup like?

  3. Charles July 9th, 2006 6:10 am

I’m using a cheap Wal-Mart microphone with Adobe Audition. I’ll upgrade the mic later if this appears like it’ll last and grow, and I get a few more bills paid off. :)

This is a very cool idea! I’m looking forward to hear more from you!

When that’s said, I do have one complaint: Your voice was kind of boring. It sounded too much like you were just reading something someone else handed to you and that you’d practiced a couple of times before recording it. You should try to relax and be more natural. Try listening to Digg Nation for inspiration! :)

And about those bugs in 2.0.3: Untill 2.0.4 comes around you can get help from Wordpress 2.0.3 Tuneup.

Nice work, Charles! You ought to get set up to do remote interviews and have guests on the podcast.

    A good start. More specifically:
    - I agree with the earlier comment that you might liven up the delivery a little
    - but you seem to have a naturally laid-back tone, and you should work with that
    - the theme, music, and your natural tone go well together
    - if you want some help in putting together a show about what people are doing with WordPress Multi-User, drop me a line.

I added the podcast to Odeo. The Odeo channel is: http://odeo.com/channel/112160/view

Charles, you might want to claim the feed - http://studio.odeo.com/channel/112160/claim.

Erundur, why would I want to set up a 2nd feed page for the podcast? Maybe I just don’t understand what Odeo is all about.

Andrew, we’ll talk… that sounds like a great idea.

Andy, I’m already working on that, are you offering to be a guest? :)

Jason Van Orden has already agreed to talk about podcasting with WordPress, Matt has given us a nod by posting about us, so I’m hoping he’ll be open to speaking with us, and I have several others in mind too.

bage, I’m hurt! You think I’m boring?! :) Seriously, I wrote that script to sound as close to my conversational voice as I could manage, and I did record it probably 10 times between all the interruptions and odd background sounds and screw-ups. You’ve got to remember this is all new to me, it’ll probably improve as I get more used to the idea. (I hope!)

As for the music, many of you are probably aware of Matt’s love for jazz music and that every new release is released on the birthday of a legendary jazz musician, taking that musician’s name as a code name. That’s why I chose the jazz music as the bed music for the podcast. In fact, Matt actually complimented me on the choice!

All great ideas, my friends! Keep them coming!

Hey, if you need some uplifting background noise, feel free to grab any of the 150+ free MP3 songs on my site. Free to download, free to use, free to re-distribute to anyone. Not that it is very good music, but it is music made by a WP-theme coder. ;)

And since you ask for news: I have recently released a theme named WP-Andreas01 for WordPress. It is based on the “andreas01″ free XHTML/CSS template (known from OSWD.org and OpenWebDesign.org). The template is one of the most downloaded open source website templates in the world (200.000+ downloads in one year) so even though the theme is not anything special I think many people will use it. Url for the theme: http://themes.wordpress.net/columns/3-columns/704/wp-andreas01-12/ . Notable features: Two layouts (2 or 3 columns), dual-sidebar widget support and dynamic sub-page menus.

Also worth mentioning, just for the fun of it: On the Silktide SiteScore website quality chart (http://www.silktide.com/tools/sitescore/top-sitescores), three sites on the top-10 belong to WordPress theme coders! =)

  12. Le podcast de WordPress…

Voila une news qui va faire plaisir a Matthieu. Je viens en effet d’apprendre de la part de Matt Mullenweg qu’un podcast en anglais enregistre par des utilisateurs etait disponible pour faire le point sur……

I would love it if providing a transcript along with a podcast was SOP. Remember, plenty of deaf/hearing impaired folks out there who would also be interested…

Just discovered your podcast, Charles. Nice work.

As a podcaster myself, I often listen to other podcasts to get an ear, so to speak, on how others deliver their content. You sound just fine to me! So keep up the great work you’ve started.

  17. Charles July 13th, 2006 10:14 pm

anon, I could always post the script, but everything we’ll cover will be included (including links) in the show notes, shouldn’t that be enough?

  18. Seek3r July 14th, 2006 5:34 am

Since your using the podPress plugin, are you planning to cover it in an upcoming episodes?

  19. [...] The first is The WordPress Podcast, a new podcast launched last week by Charles Tricklin. The first episode is under five minutes and features easy-to-listen-to and understand commentary about WordPress, a couple of plugins and the WordPress theme competition. [...]

  20. Charles July 14th, 2006 11:27 am

    Seek3r,

I have standing plans to do an interview with Jason Van Orden about Podcasting with WordPress, and I’m sure we’ll mention it then.

This is great! I love listening to Americans talking about technical computer stuff, it helps me brush up my English ;)
    Keep up the great work!
